Clever Clogs Pre-school
4.9 Safe Sleeping Policy
Policy Statement
Clever Clogs Pre-school is committed to ensuring that all children aged 2–5 years are provided with a safe and comfortable environment if they require a sleep. This policy sets out the procedures we follow to maintain high standards of safety, supervision and care.
Procedures
- Children’s individual sleep needs and routines are discussed with parents/carers during induction.
- If a child needs a sleep, they will be laid on our designated mat which is washed regularly.
- Staff ensure the sleep environment is free from hazards.
- Staff remain in the room where they can hear and see the child.
- Regular checks are carried out every 10 minutes to ensure the child is breathing – these are recorded on our sleep log.
- 2-5 year olds can choose their own sleep position but staff should ensure the child is lying safely and not in a position that looks unsafe.
- Clothing such as hoodies, hats or anything which can cover the child’s face must be removed.
- If a child becomes unsettled or appears unwell during sleep time, staff will respond immediately and inform the manager or deputy manager.
Parent Communication:
- Parents/carers will be informed of their child’s rest or sleep patterns at pick-up time and any concerns will be discussed promptly.
- Any significant changes in a child’s sleep habits observed in the setting will be shared sensitively with parents/carers.
Responsibilities:
- The manager and deputy manager are responsible for ensuring safe sleep procedures are followed consistently and for providing regular staff training.
- All staff are responsible for maintaining a safe sleep environment, carrying out sleep checks and adhering to this policy at all times.
